Kambria is an open innovation platform that enables and incentivizes collaborations in R&D, manufacturing, and commercialization of advanced technology. Research partners play an integral role in the Kambria ecosystem. Come learn how Kambria is working together with Universities to develop new technologies. Our first vertical is AI and robotics applications. Kambria contains protocols uniquely designed with blockchain and crypto-economics to address the current waste and inefficiencies plaguing today’s innovation model. Kambria has an elegant “micro-licensing” system to ensure that commercialization is easy and predictable. Anyone, from big companies to startups to individual entrepreneurs, can license out any portion of the technology stack without the burden of legal paperwork and negotiations. Simultaneously, smart contracts ensure that licensing fees are attributed fairly and in a transparent manner.

The Kambria protocol spans across three key areas:

  1. Governance: Token holders can stake their tokens to elect a set of experts who will help with governance as well as growing of the “technology trees” on Kambria.
  2. Attribution: Contributions into Kambria will be evaluated automatically so that attributions will be rewarded fairly.
  3. Protection: Community can collectively ensure licensing agreements are upheld by partners.

Interactions on the platform are facilitated by the Kambria Token (KAT). Universities can receive tokens (convertible to the currency of choice) for completing work that is commissioned by bounty challenges. Individual or teams are rewarded with tokens for designs or code they contribute. Manufacturers earn tokens through the production of robots and robotic parts. Community members use tokens to promote specific projects and fundraise for legal protection of the shared technology. Tokens can also be used to fairly capture the value created by the Kambria platform and sustain the growing community.

This model enables a research partner to be rewarded for significant development even though it may not result in the formation of a company or the sale of IP. A technical challenge, financial shortcoming or loss of human resources can prevent the completion of a planned project — this happens all the time. But the innovations developed may still have tremendous value in their pieces. In the Kambria ecosystem, the pieces are monetized with the Kambria Token. In addition, contributed IP can be licensed to others in the community — often corporations who want to incorporate the IP in a larger solution. This can generate a sustained revenue stream for as long as it maintains its value. Kambria manages the entire process — negotiations, legal docs, etc — making it very easy to capitalize even without the needed business expertise.

Kambria will:

  • Open the Kambria community to the research universities
  • Invite members to learn about and join the Kambria community
  • Jointly build technology labsEquipped with robots, robotic parts, dev kit, 3D-printing capabilities, and others
  • Educate research partners on Kambria community development model
  • Real-time presentation and documentation
  • Jointly create a learning module
  • Kambria to provide content, research partner to provide methodology
  • Share its knowledge of robotic technologies and development techniques
  • Document Kambria state of the art technology and processes
  • Assign attributions via the Kambria platform through its value capture protocol
  • Ensured to be fair, transparent, and decentralized
  • Co-host annual events
  • Hackathons, symposiums, conferences
  • Keep research partners appraised of its business and technical progress
  • Semi-annual briefings

Research Partner will:

  • Jointly build technology labs
  • Provide space and access to existing expertise
  • Promote Kambria’s unique development model to its members
  • Ensure that people are aware of the new community
  • Jointly create a learning module
  • Kambria to provide content, research partner to provide methodology
  • Monitor development program progress and communicate successes
  • Success will generate continued innovation and participation
  • Provide feedback to Kambria on new areas for focus
  • Help concentrate Kambria on the areas that will provide the most value
  • Promote the projects and hackathons on Kambria to its members

Benefits to Research Partners:

  • Access to state of the art technology lab
  • Access to state of the art robotic technology that can be leveraged in the development of advanced capabilities — focus on the core technology, not the required complex technical foundations
  • Collaboration with developers within the worldwide community
  • Lower costs so more budget dollars can be allocated to new research
  • With Kambria’s token model, research partners can monetize developments that don’t necessarily result in a successful startup company
  • Access to a large community of corporate partners who can help commercialize IPs of the research partner

Benefits to Kambria:

  • Creates awareness of Kambria within the research community
  • Kambria community becomes stronger with the participation of world-leading researchers
  • Scientific feedback on how to make the platform better, stronger, more valuable

Current partners include: Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford University, UMass-Dartmouth, John von Neumann Institute, Nanyang Technological University. For example, with UMass-Dartmouth, Kambria will be working with their incubator to build a robotics lab to help push the development of Underwater Autonomous Vehicles capabilities.

The team is led by:

  • Dr. Thuc Vu, AI and Game Theory: Stanford grad with several company acquisitions. His last company was acquired by Google.
  • Jared Go, Robotics and Blockchain: Stanford Graduate Fellow.
  • Tingxi Tan, Blockchain and Cloud Computing: Experienced architect of global cloud systems.
  • Notable Advisors: Prof. Manuela Veloso of CMU, Simon Kim of Hashed, and Roger Lim of NEO Global Capital

Kambria is the first decentralized open innovation platform for Deep Tech (AI, Robotics, Blockchain, VR/AR…). Using our platform, anyone can collaborate in researching, developing and commercializing innovative ideas and get rewarded fairly for their contributions. Through partnerships with government agencies, top universities and leading companies, Kambria is dedicated to building a sustainable open innovation ecosystem to change the way we innovate and to accelerate advanced technology development and industry adoption. Together, let’s shape the future of technology where technology is open and contributes more to society.
